When I was a kid, I once hammered a bunch of nails into a square wooden board, creating curvy rows of thin nails that stuck out of the wood a good inch or so. For this piece, I attached a contact mic to the board, threaded some guitar strings through the nails, and stroked and hammered the nails and strings with a violin bow. Pauline Oliveros called it a "nail violin" when I showed it to her. I also used this instrument for "Silesian Winter".
