Recorded at MacColl Studio For Electronic Music using a homemade instrument I built. The instrument mounted a spring between the ends of two sticks that were joined by an axle so I could open and close the sticks to stretch and release the spring. I coiled wire around a speaker magnet, plugged that directly into a tape machine, and positioned the magnet under the spring. The whooshing, murmuring sounds are created by the spring modulating the field of the electromagnet, like a giant floppy guitar string vibrating in wide arcs over a pickup. When the spring hits the magnet, you hear very abrupt percussive thumps (don't play this too loud on your stereo, I remember Shep wincing when I played this for the class and he said he was worried about his speakers).
I recorded one pass improvising on this instrument, then added layers of synth, found and otherwise sounds, to augment the phrases and the form on an MCI 8-track deck.
